Universally, people want to feel they have a place to belong. Being at a university can be very intimidating. Belonging speaks to something very deep and personal in all of us and with which the largest number of us can identify. The community ideal may be a way to offer people the opportunity to create a place where they belong, are wanted, and are cared about.

Inspired by the writings of renowned educator Ernest Boyer, FSUnited is an initiative dedicated to enhancing the sense of community at Florida State University. It serves as both an animating spirit and coordinating network for the community-building programs sponsored by similarly intentioned yet independent groups on campus.

It begins with a coalition of students, faculty, and staff dedicated to making our University an academic setting where each individual is welcomed and prized for their personal and cultural uniqueness. It is realized when the social, cultural, racial, and ethnic barriers that separate us are broken down and eliminated.

The name FSUnited is deliberate. The founders believe it conveys an action-orientation that resonates with supporters. Although Student Affairs provides its institutional home, FSUnited arose as an initiative for students, led by students.
